City Tweed DK from WeCrochet in Porpoise (3 skiens/369yds for size 2/4, 4 skeins/492yds for 6/8, 5 skeins/615yds 250g for 10/12) – any DK yarn will work

FRONT

ch 7 (leave a long end for sewing)

Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and across (6 sc)

Row 2: ch 1, turn, sc in first stitch, sc blo in next 4, sc in last stitch (6 sc)

Row 3 – (34, 40, 46) (52, 58, 64): repeat row 2

The ribbing is approx the width of the sweater (it will continue to widen some), easily adjust the width by adding or taking out rows.

Now you will turn and work across the long edge of the ribbed band

Row 1: ch 1, sc evenly across working 1 sc in the end of each row ((34, 40, 46) (52, 58, 64) sc)

SEWING

Lay the front on top of the back. Using the long end, sew the shoulders together with a whip stitch. The repeat with the sides, sewing up to where the armhole starts.

Weave in the ends. Turn right side out.

COLLAR

Join yarn to the bottom left corner of the opening.

ch 1, sc around, working 2 sc in the end of each row along the side, then across the top of the back panel, down the opposite side, working 2 sc in the end of each row along the side, then across the 6 stitch across the bottom of the front, join to first sc with sl st.

APPLIED RIBBING

Row 1: ch 1, turn, sc in 6 stitches, join to sc along the side with sl st (6 sc)

Row 2: sl st to next sc, turn, sc in first stitch, sc blo in next 4, sc in last (6 sc)

Row 3: ch 1, turn, sc in first stitch, sc blo in next 4, sc in last stitch (6 sc)

Repeat rows 2 & 3

until you work all the way around the collar

Fasten off.

Leave a long end for sewing.

Lay the last row of ribbing on top of the first row of ribbing.

Use the long end to whip stitch the top of the last row to the bottom of the first row to close the collar.

Weave in the ends.

ARMHOLES

Join yarn to the bottom of an armhole, ch 1, sc evenly around, working 2 sc in the end of each row.

Fasten off. Weave in the ends.

Repeat for other armhole.

And that’s it! You’re all finished with this sweater vest!

  1. I don’t understand the neck line. For a size 2 year. Am I to do a hdc2tog then miss stitches and do 8 hdc to the end?? Plus I end up with more stitches than you say I should have e at the end of the second neck line row… Please help

    1. Hi! You will do the 2tog, then hbdc in 6 stitches, then another 2tog. Ending with 8 stitches total. You won’t work all the way across, just halfway 🙂
