Moss Stitch (Stitch Sampler Scrapghan CAL 2023 – Part 1)

January 27, 2023

The first stitch for the 2023 Stitch Sampler Scrapghan CAL is one of my all-time favorites – the Moss Stitch (also known as the Linen Stitch or Granite Stitch)! I’ve used this stitch in quite a few patterns: the Moss Boss Cowl, Horizon Blanket, Finally Fall Shawl, and the One Skein Infinity Scarf.

It’s not too late to join the Stitch Sampler Scrapghan CAL! You can find all the Scrapghan Crochet Along info HERE. Join my FACEBOOK GROUP to share your progress with your fellow crocheters!

Materials
54g Worsted weight yarn + small amount for the border (the same color that will be used for sewing – optional)
H/5.0 mm hook
Yarn needle
Scissors

Level
Easy

Pattern notes & stitches to know
ch – chain
sc – single crochet

· written in US terms

· ch 2 counts as sc + ch 1

· this square is 2 sided and does not have a right side

· This stitch requires a starting ch of an even number

· Approx finished size: 7” x 7”

· This square would look great with variegated yarn or in stripes (I recommend changing colors every 2 rows and carrying the yarn so there are less ends to weave in 😉 )

Scrapghan Tips

· If you’re having trouble getting the sizing right, remember that it’s easier to adjust a square that’s too small than one that’s too big.

· If a square comes out too small you can add an additional round for the border, go up a hook size, and/or steam block and stretch the square to the size you want.

· The edges might curl. This can be fixed with some steam blocking. It won’t be noticeable after sewing.

· Each square has at least 2 rounds of border. For the last round of the border I used the same color for each square (the dark gray). This is the same color used for the sewing.

· Each square does not need the same number of stitches for the border.

· Make 2 of each square. Alternatively, you can use cotton yarn and make 1 square to use as a dishcloth.

  1. Hi Breann – thank you sooo much for this CAL! I’ve been trying to teach myself how to crochet and have been failing magnificently 😂. Your video was great and I feel I have actually mastered this stitch – at least so I see progress! However, I have now fallen down as I try to do the border as I’m not sure I understand how to do as I’m not visualizing it. Do you have a short video on how to do this border? Thanks so much for sharing your expertise.

    1. Hi! Sorry, I don’t! When you work around the square you will work into the end of each row along the sides. Skipping every 3rd stitch. Then the same way along the top and bottom.

  2. Hi! Me again. I wonder if there is any way to get the entire pattern at once. I’ll be traveling and won’t always have access to a computer and printer. Thanks!

  3. Hello Breann
I started working on block two and noticed that we are to start with 23 chains, while block o started with 30. Does the boarder adjust this?
    Thank you
    Linda
