With a relaxed fit, playful fringe, and optional drawstring, this cover up is as fun to wear as it is to make. Whether you’re lounging in the sun or chasing waves, you’ll feel confident and handmade-chic.
Even better? There’s a kids version available too—so you can create a matching mommy and me set for the ultimate summer vibes!

Choosing Your Yarn
For this cover up I used Caron Cotton Cakes (250g). Caron Cotton Cakes is a great choice for this project because it’s a soft, durable cotton-blend yarn that’s perfect for warm weather wearables. With its lightweight feel and excellent stitch definition, it really makes those granny hexagons pop! Plus, the generous yardage and self-striping colorways add fun visual interest without having to change colors—perfect for a playful, summer-ready cover up! Any worsted weight cotton yarn would work great for this project.

The Granny Hexagon
The granny hexagon is the perfect foundation for this project—it’s simple, versatile, and adds a fun geometric twist to a classic summer staple. Its shape naturally creates the angles needed for sleeves and shaping, making it easy to build a wearable garment without complex construction. Plus, it’s beginner-friendly and super satisfying to make, especially when you start seeing the pieces come together into a cute and comfy cover up!

Mommy & Me Project
This pattern is part of a sweet mommy and me set, with a matching adult version available too! Whether you’re twinning at the beach or just creating coordinating summer looks, it’s a fun way to make something special for both you and your little one. Customize the colors, add fringe, and make it your own—because handmade is always better together! Get the kid’s version >HERE<.
