I am obsessed with the yarn I used for this project. I used Yarn Bee’s Urban Chic in Gray. I love everything about it… the colors, the feel, the weight… everything! It’s perfect for when you need just an extra bit of warmth. Due to the open and airy style of the stitch and the light weight yarn, it would work great for a springtime sweater!

Ch 141 [151]

Row 1: dc in 5th ch from the hook (counts as dc + ch 1), *ch 1, skip one stitch, dc in next* repeat from * to * across (69 dc, 68 ch 1 spaces) [74 dc, 73 ch 1 spaces]

Row 2: ch 4 (counts as dc + ch 1), turn, dc in first ch 1 space *ch 1, dc in next ch 1 space* repeat from * to * across, dc in ch 4 space from previous round (69 dc, 68 ch 1 spaces) [74 dc, 73 ch 1 spaces]

Repeat row 2 to row 62 (rectangle should measure 38 inches long)

L/XL

[repeat row 2 to row 67]

CONSTRUCTION

Fold the rectangle in half (bringing the top down so the rows are horizontal). Starting about halfway down from the fold, sew down both sides using a slip stitch, making sure to line up the rows evenly. The unsewn spaces at the top are the armholes. Fasten off, weave in the ends

After itโ€™s sewn, pull the top and bottom so the arm seams are running horizontal through the middle. This is how you wear the piece, you can see that itโ€™s looking more sweater-like! ๐Ÿ™‚

SLEEVES

Join yarn to one of the armholes.

Row 1: ch 1, sc around the armhole, join to top of first sc with a sl st

Row 2: ch 4 (counts as dc + ch 1), skip one stitch, dc in next, *ch 1, skip one stitch, dc in next* repeat from * to * around, join to the 3rd chain in first ch 4 with sl st

NOTE: The next 5 rows will continually decrease

Row 3 – 7: ch 4 (counts as dc + ch 1), dc in next ch 1 space, *ch 1, dc in next ch 1 space* repeat from * to * around, skip the last ch space, join to the 3rd chain in first ch 4 with sl st

Change to gray yarn

Row 8 – 10: ch 1, sc in same stitch and in each dc and ch around, join to top of first sc with a sl st

Fasten off, weave in all the ends.

Repeat on other armhole.

COLLAR

Join gray yarn to outside border,

Row 1: ch 1, sc evenly around, join to the top of first sc with a sl st

Row 2: ch 2, hdc in each stitch around, join to top of first hdc with sl st

Fasten off, weave in the ends.

And you’re done! I hope you love this cocoon sweater!

      1. Hi can you please tell me a few things? 1. Size of rectangle after all rows and 2. Are we to fold the in half of to the center with the shor ends going to the middle ofblong length

        1. -S/M – pictured (I’m 5’0″)
          Width: 35 inches
          Length: 38 inches

          -L/XL
          Width: 38.5 inches
          Length: 41.5 inches

The rows should be going horizontal ๐Ÿ™‚

        2. I measure it but not same as your measurement, but exact stitches counting. The L/XL is small for me am medium size.

          1. Could I use a light #4 weight yarn or ice yarn Picasso it’s a 4 but it’s rainbow I really want a rainbow cocoon thanks

          2. You definitely can ๐Ÿ™‚ It might come out a little larger than the finished sizes given in the pattern.

  1. Hi
Your works are so nice..good jod
My problem i can’t follow thr pattern..do you a video for this.

    Thanks

    Lina

    1. Thanks! I love the color. This is what my daughter would wear. I found a Christmas gift for her. I am excited!

  2. How would one make it shorter so as not to cover the bum. I don’t think that’s flattering for a lot of people. Would the rectangle just be made shorter?

  3. This is a beautiful. I am wondering what is the stitch count for the rows? Does every row have the same of stitches? I’m sorry, I’m just confused. Also, row 2 only has a chain 4 right, you don’t chain 4 then chain one more, right.

      1. Hi,
Iโ€™m piggy backing on this question! Iโ€™m feeling a bit dumb, since your description says โ€œif you can crochet a rectangle you can make thisโ€ lol!! I swear I can…but Iโ€™m a bit confused with the ends and beginnings of each row. Iโ€™ve frogged a few times because I keep adding stitches.

At the end of each row, are you putting your final dc into the ch-4 space, or into the 4th chain of the turning row?

At the beginning of each row, are you chaining 4, or are you chaining 5? And are you placing your first dc into the very first space, or into the second?

Thank you, Iโ€™m determined to make this!

        1. Hi ? The final dc goes in the last ch 1 space. At the beginning of the row ch 4 and dc into the first ch space. Basically your e only dc-ing into ch spaces for the entire piece. Hope this helps ?

        2. Iโ€™ve started this using the L/XL size thinking it would be big enough with adding a few extra chains. But not even close. Not sure what Iโ€™m doing wrong. I wear a 2X-3X. Could you please give me instructions on how to make this size. Would a bigger hook help?? Bought the Hobby Lobby Urban Chic yarn in the pink/gray combo and it was working up just great. But it didnโ€™t even come close to wrapping around me. Now I have all this frogged yarn that I canโ€™t return and still so want to make this. PLEASE HELP.

          1. Hi! You can chain any odd number for this sweater. You can make the ch the width you need it and then make sure it’s an odd number ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. Hi
I was wondering how many rows do you consider on doing if I wanted the heinie only half covered? I was thinking maybe 56 or 58..what do you think?

    1. I think that sounds about right. Keep in mind that I’m only 5 feet tall, so it might be shorter on you (or whoever you’re making it for ๐Ÿ™‚ ) than it is on me. Definitely measure!

      1. That is right! I didn’t think of that because I’m making it for my mother in law and she is about 5’8. I can’t measure because it’s a surprise for her. So maybe I’ll do 60 or just leave it at 62. Thank you so much!

  5. Could I get away with using a heavier yarn (4)? My local store has little options for 3’s. Thank you!

    1. I think so. The piece will come out a bit larger, but it’s not made to be fitted, so that shouldn’t be a problem.

      1. Thank you! I will let you know how it turns out!! Also, thank you for this pattern. I have been looking for a cute, easy sweater pattern for a long time!

  6. Could you please tell me what the measurements are for the rectangle before you fold it? And thank you for the pattern ๐Ÿ™‚

  7. Thank you so much for your lovely pattern. I look forward to making it.
I am relatively new to crochet, could you tell me if your pattern is in US terms or UK terms please?
I know I should know by looking, but I am not too sure as yet.
    Thanking you kindly.

  8. I am 6 ft tall and I feel the l/xl may still be too small. I wear a XL or 2X shirt depending on how it’s made. I love how large and loose it is in you. Suggestions on how many extra stitches to add and how many rows to add? Thanks a ton!!

    1. Hi Linnae ๐Ÿ™‚ My rectangle is basically a square, so I chained a little longer than the length I wanted it, and that was my width (I’m very technical, as you can see ;P)

Maybe add 10 – 20 more chains to the starting chain? Then just go until it’s a couple inches longer than you want.

For reference: every 10 chains (in the beginning ch) adds about 3.5 inches to the width

      I hope this helps!! ๐Ÿ™‚

      1. Hi, I love this but am only a basic crocheter. Would you mind letting me know how I would make this a 3x. Do I just made a chain big enough to fit around me and in a multiple of 4?

        1. Hi Erin, the rectangle is basically a square, so I made a chain the length from the bottom of my neck to the top of my thighs (I’m very technical, as you can tell ๐Ÿ˜‰ ) then crocheted until it was about a square. So you chain will need to be bigger than what will fit around you. Maybe the length from forearm to forearm? I hope this helps!

      2. I’m also 6ft and a 3XL so that was going to be my question also. Thank you for this cute pattern. I can’t wait to try it.

  9. This is a beautiful sweater! Have a few questions…. I’m making this for my 8yr old daughter so I’m clearly making the rectangle much shorter but the rectangle once completed, from neckline to bottom should be the length you desire, or will it get shorter after sewing?

      1. Ok great thanks for the quick response! Now to figure out the sewing lol I do not know why I can’t seem to imagine it no matter how many times I read it

  10. I know you used Gray and Mist for the colors in pattern. What colors did you use for the sweater shown? Thanks.

    1. Hi Gail, those are the colors I used for the sweater shown. For the majority of the sweater I used Yarn Bee’s Urban Chic yarn in Gray. It’s called gray, but it’s a self striping yarn with the different grays and neons. ๐Ÿ™‚

  11. I started making this last night, using a thicker yarn though. Wanted it to be warm and snuggly. Keeping my fingers crossed.

  12. Hey I’m in the middle of making this but I’m using three different solid colored yarns. I’m making thick stripes of each. Will it look crazy when it’s done? I didn’t think about it lining up right. ๐Ÿ™

  13. I have another question.. I want a certain side to be the inside of the sweater. Should I make sure that is the inside of the fold I sew or outside?

      1. HI Breann,
To adjust the pattern to fit a size 2x to 3x I’m thinking a chain of 171 to 181.
How many rows would you recommend?
        Looking forward to making this.

    1. I don’t. But you can chain a length about 20 inches wide, then crochet until the piece is about 20 inches long. Hope this helps!

  14. One more question ( sorry I have so many). I’m making one of these for my friends and she wants long sleeves. How would I go about doing that? Thanks in advance

  15. Hello! Thank you so much for the pattern!! I need some help… I couldn t understant where i have to sew it?? can you please help me??

    1. Of course! I’ll show you my finished sweater. Lay the rectangle out with the rows going horizontal. Fold in half by bringing the top down.
      null
The fold is at the top and the opening is at the bottom.
Join yarn in the middle of the side (where my hand is)
      null
You can see where the sleeve will be.

      I hope this helps! ๐Ÿ™‚

      1. Thank you so much!! I always said that crafters and crocheters have to sare their tricks it s like you sare your magic tricks, and you respond immediately!! Thank you again ( i m sorry for my poor english) ??

  16. This seems like such a silly question but once the sweater is completed how do you tell the top (collar)end from the bottom end. Putting it on it seems there is no difference. Thanks

  17. Hi there ๐Ÿ™‚ I made the mistake of going with stitch count vs measuring how many inches it should have been. I’m 5’10 and have fairly broad shoulders. My width is 29″ ๐Ÿ™ …anything I can do to “save” this/increase the width? Or do u have any ideas of what I can make with a 29″ x 42″ rectangle? Rooky mistake!

    1. Hi Kristen! You could crochet along each side to add some width. You could use the solid gray for this and I think it would turn out fine. Or you could keep going and turn the rectangle so the 42 inches is the width. I hope this helps!! ?

      1. Thank you for the quick response! Since I used a multi-color yarn, I’d have to use a solid color which is fine..do u suggest I Chain about 15-20 on each side and work vertically through the length of the piece? Or, create 2 separate pieces (15-20 chains x 42″) and slip stitch to main piece? Whenever I try and add on to pieces it always looks wonky, lol. Do my questions make sense? Thank u so much for your help! Trying to post a pic for u, but can’t seem to do that either!

        1. I would join the yarn to the corner and sc evenly along the side of the rectangle. Then there’s no attaching needed ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. If you look at the tag around the yarn, you’ll see numbers that relate to how thick the yarn is (category 4 is the most common). I think skein and ball are interchangeable.

  18. I just love this cocoon sweater! Iโ€™m super new at crocheting & knitting. I will definitely give this pattern a try! Iโ€™m such a visual learner (YouTube) has been my teacher. I appreciate reading your comments & tips too.
Will you be doing a video tutorial anytime soon (when u get equipped) If so will you email us the link so we can subscribe and follow along? ??
PS I too am obsessed with Romance Books as well!

Thank you again Breann & Happy Holidays to you and yours!

  19. Love this pattern! My daughter sent me a picture and asked if I could make her one. She want grey. I am using Lion Brand Scarfie (5) color is cream/silver. After multiple startovers of the 1st row, I am now on a roll. Iโ€™m loving what I am seeing as the rows grow!

  20. Someone asked previously if you just have to make the rectangle shorter if you want the finished sweater to be shorter. You said yes, but does that mean you make the original chain row shorter, or just make less rows total? I’m curious as well because I would like it to sit at around the top of my hips.

      1. I was only curious about the chain because it looks like after everything is folded and sewn together, the rows are going vertically, which would mean the chain should be shorter. Maybe I’m wrong, it just looks that way based on the photos. Sorry for all of my questions.

        1. I now see what I was looking at the wrong way. The back rows look horizontal, but the front looks vertical, so I think that is exactly where I was feeling confused. I feel a bit silly now because I had the full 67 rows and ended up taking it all apart because I thought the chain had to be shorter. Oh boy! *Facepalm*

          1. Yes, the back is horizontal ๐Ÿ™‚ I wish I would have been able to answer before you undid it all ๐Ÿ™

  21. I just finished the rectangle for the sweater, but am a little confused with how to sew the sides together. Would you mind describing it to me in more detail? You say sew it together using a slip stitch. Does that mean slip stitch in just the openings at the end of each row? This is my first time making anything like this, so I just want to make sure I do it correctly. Thanks so much! ?

    1. Hi! Because there aren’t any tops of stitches to stitch into, you just have to make sure it’s done evenly. I would add more than one sl st in each opening so you don’t tighten it up too much. I hope that helps!

  22. This pattern was SUPER EASY to follow, however, the sizing is VERY OFF for a L/XL. I would highly recommend anyone sizing up to add NO LESS than an extra 10-20 stitches more than what the L/XL pattern calls for. Iโ€™m so bummed and having to ad-lib and figure out a way to add to this to make it work. As far as pattern goes, it is very well written and so easy to follow.

    1. Hi! I’m sorry the sizing didn’t turn out for you. ? I just checked the sizing on mine and it’s written correctly. Your tension might be tighter than mine. ?

  23. Hi, I am loving the look of this pattern but was wondering if I could modify it to make it a bit smaller. Would it effect the sleeves or could I just make a smaller rectangle?
    Thank you

  24. Thank you so much for this beautiful pattern. It’s been simple and really fun to make. I used 8 ply wool (so it’s nice and warm) in navy blue. It’s turned out quite well and I will look to this pattern again! Thankyou so much for the lovely and easy to follow pattern!

  25. How much wool do I need for the collar and cuffs?
Love the pattern but having to convert to UK sizes and measurements and need to ensure I have enough wool – thank Debbie

  26. Hello, Do you have a recommended method to sew the piece together after you fold it in half? This will be my first attempt at clothing item and I searched online to find sewing methods and found several directions that are easy to follow, but I am wondering what is the best way to ensure the piece holds together through wearing and washing — mattress stitch, whip stitch, crochet slip stitch, … ? Thank you.
