#desertlife Crochet Poncho Pattern

November 7, 2017

I named this Crochet Poncho Pattern the  #desertlife Poncho because this is about as cozy as we get here in the desert! It’s still a bit warm around here and I think this is a wearable I can actually wear. I haven’t really been able to wear any of my other makes yet this season. I’m hoping to get some use out of this one!

I’m in love with these neutrals. The colors are gorgeous! I really liked this Shawl in a Ball yarn because it has a thread of sparkle in it. It makes me feel just a bit fancy 😉 The original plan for this poncho was to add fringe and a hood, but once I got to this point I was loving it! I don’t think it needs anything extra. Although some fringe would be pretty awesome and it would be really easy to add along the last row.

  1. Greetings from NYC beautiful and well written you should do a youtube tutorial do you think caron cakes would work with this? i saved it and will give it a must try. thank you.

  2. Should round 4 have 2 dc’s instead of 1 dc? The pattern shows (dc,ch2,dc), should it be (2dc,ch2,2dc)?

    Thank you
    Margaret

  3. I seem to be having problems with row 4. My alternate dc stitches don’t match the same stitches on both of the the centre 2dc ch2 2dc ?any help please , tia ?

  4. Hi
    Love this pattern !!
Made 2 and am starting #3 next.
Using different colors of Shawl in a ball.
First one same color as yours.
Second Community Coral and next one
    will Healing Teal
Thanks for such an easy pattern!!
    Donna

  5. Made the first 3 ponchos and am now planning to do one for my coworker’s 7 yr old daughter using Shawl in a Ball “Pixie Dust”.-
That is if I figure out how to crochet a
    small enough size.

  6. I like the poncho very much, but would live to make it in a thin wool yarn. How many meters per 50g is your yarn?
    Greetings from Denmark

    1. I just made this for my mother in the large size and it is beautiful! I’d love to make one for my daughter who is 3 but I’m very new to crochet and have no idea how to shrink it down to a smaller size. What multiples should I use? If that makes sense…

      1. Hi! I don’t know an exact number without making it myself. Your starting chain just needs to be an odd number 🙂

        1. Thanks! I started playing around with it yesterday and used a starting chain of 63 and a G hook. It was perfect! I posted pics on Ravelry. Such a lovely pattern, and now I have 2 more big ones to make–one for me, and one for my MIL 🙂

  7. I do so love your patterns. But I’m a 2-3X size and so far I have not seen any of your patterns in plus sizes. How would I increase to make this wider? I guess girls in the desert are not as wide as girls in the northeastern part of the country.

  8. Hi,
For size L/XL, how many skeins are needed?
What size is the one in the pictures? S/M? or L/XL?

    Please and thank you.

      1. To match the gauge I’m using a K hook. Have crocheted 11 rows. The neck opening is very small. The v in the front it’s right on my collar bone. What did I do wrong? I am following the directions for the extra large. I started with 85 chains. The only thing I can think of is to use more than 85 chains. But I don’t understand why I should have to. I look forward to your response. Thank you in advance.

        1. It’s me again. I just rechecked my gauge and it’s still not Big enough. I just did a sample gauge with an L size hook. Now the gauge is perfect. I must really crochet tight or something. Wish me luck.

    1. Hi there! I started the poncho and am wondering if for each row the first stitch is in the same stitch (after the chain 3) or in the next stitch? Thank you!

  9. Hi. I’m trying to match your gauge and I keep having to go larger and larger with the crochet hook. Is that because maybe I crochet tighter than you do? Should I just keep using a larger hook till I find the correct gauge?

  10. I love this pattern! My daughter prefers ponchos over coats so I am always looking for patterns. I magde her one in shades of blue with Fringes and she loves it. Thank you!

  11. Hi!

I want to make this shawl for my sister but I see that the “Lion Brand Shawl in a Ball” yarn is discontinued.

What would be a good alternative yarn to use? Any recommendations? Thanks so much!
