Of course, I had one laying around, just waiting to be used and it turned out to be the perfect amount of yarn to make this circle vest! I used almost exactly one cake. So if you crochet loosely, or up a hook size, one cake may not be enough.

The vest starts with this pretty flower center!  I love this fun detail. Then the edges are pretty and flowy. Because of the flowy deisgn, this vest will fit a range of sizes. It has fit my 6 year old for about a year now, and it also fits my 8 year old!

I basically made up this vest as I went and then went back to figure the pattern. Not the best strategy… 😛 but I really wanted be able to share this cute vest! Honestly, I wouldn’t worry about exact numbers, as long each row is working up nicely, it should turn out in the end 🙂

Materials:
1 skein Caron Cake in Faerie Cake
5.5 mm hook
Yarn needle
Scissors

Level: Beginner to Intermediate

Pattern notes & stitches to know:
Sl st – slip stich
Ch – chain
Sc – single crochet
Dc – double crochet
Dc2tog – (double crochet 2 together) Yarn over, insert hook into stitch, yarn over pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through two loops, (you have two loops left on hook), yarn over and insert hook into next stitch, pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through two loops, yarn over and pull through all three hoops

**NOTE: Beginning ch 3 in each round counts as a dc

Finished product has an approximate diameter of 29 inches and is approximately 11 inches on the back between the arm holes. To adjust the size of the pattern you can change your hook size. As I noted earlier, I used almost exactly one skein with a 5.5 hook. The final product hangs loose, so it will fit a wide range of kids sizes. It fit both my girls ages 5 and 7, and could fit larger. (the 5 year old is pictured)

      1. I love this pattern! I am going to start on this in couple of days after I finish my current project.
This will be for my granddaughter who wears a 5t.
Thank you so much for this pattern.
I would love to make her a really pretty summer dress as well!!!

    1. hi! I’m loving this pattern! Quick question, in round 13, are we counting the ch1 spaces from previous row as stitches?
      Thank you!

  1. I am having trouble with rnd 12. If I skip a stitch sc in next 3, there is no stitch to skip before the sc of previous row.

    1. Aw, man! That’s because I made a mistake in row 11. >__< Each shell (in row 11) should have 5 stitches, (hdc, 3dc, hdc). I'm so sorry, Brenda! I've updated the post.

      1. Hi! The last row is row 21 in the pattern
Round 21: *5 dc in next sc, sc in next ch 5 space* repeat from * to * around, join to the first dc

  2. Should row 7 have 48dc when we have dctog in this round? I have 36 and just getting confused.

    1. I guess it depends on how you are counting. I was counting how many dc stitches there were, not the top of the stitches, if that makes sense? So it sounds like you’re right, just counting a different part of the stitch 🙂

      1. Thank you. I was able to get it.
I’m having trouble with row 11.
If row 10 has 58. I can’t get 30 shells and 29 sc. It seems like there is an extra stitch? (30+29=59)

        1. You’re right, that is wrong. It should be 29 shells and 29 sc. I’m out of town right now so I can’t double check, but if I’m thinking correctly, 29 & 29 should work. I hope that helps. So sorry about that ?

          1. Hello Breann, thank you so much for this lovely pattern I just finished one in less than 24hrs. It’s so beautiful, I used Hobby Lobbys I love this yarn in #494 instant classic. ?? if love to share a picture, do I do this on your Facebook page? I’m going to share on Instagram I follow you there as well. Thank you again

          1. Hi! To make it for an adult you can repeat the rounds right before the armholes until it’s the width you want. Then make the armholes. Then repeat the last round until it’s the width you want. I hope that helps!

      2. I am totally confused with row 16. Can you please give me some help with this. How do you dc2tog in the chain one space? Help? i am new to crocheting.

    2. Hola estoy haciendo este hermoso chaleco pero hay siglas que no entiendo que es cc, slip stich. Gracias

  3. In round 10, I come out with only 57 dc, so the shells are not spaced properly. Am I missing something? Thanks.

    1. I counted that first ch4 as a dc and got 58 stitches but still can’t get the shells to space properly ?

    2. Hello! Are you counting the first ch 3? I’m out of town at the moment, so I’m not able to double check it ?

      1. Yes, I am counting the first chain 3. I tried adding two extra stitches in row 9, so I did get 58 dc in row 10, and the shells worked in row 11, but then row 12 didn’t work.

  4. I finally finished up the vest. It’s beautiful:)
    I have 11inches between the arms but it’s only 20″ long 🙁
I have quite bit of yarn left over.

    1. I’m glad it’s pretty! I just remeasured mine (after scouring the girls’ room for it! ;D) and it’s about 29 inches long. You could just repeat the netting in the last rows until it’s the length you like and then do the row of shells.

  5. Thanks for your pattern
I try it for 6-years old girl and well – fit for her
But I used 2 double yarn in white color with 5 mm hook as my yarn is very thin

  6. I am stuck on row 16. It says to dc2tog. Should it instead be 2 dc in the same space? Or am I to make 2dctog in the space instead of doing it over 2 stitches?

      1. I do not get row 16 at all. Do you do all the directions from the start to finish. slip stitch every time to chain 1 and do both groups of stitches in parentheses or just the 2nd group? How do you do a dc2tog without using 2 stitches? Sorry I am so confused.

        1. Hi! No, don’t slip stitch each time, just the direction between the ( ). Dc2tog is in the chain space, not over 2 stitches. Hope that helps!

          1. I don’t understand what i am to do this round. I am afdaid i am quite confused about what i am to dc2tog in tne ch1 spaces. Can someone explain this to me, please?

          2. Work 2 double crochets together in the ch 1 space. Both stitches will be in the space.

        2. I also am very confused about round 16. I know how to dc2tog, but what stitches do i do it with? How do I do this all in the chain 1 space? Any advice how to do this?

          1. So i am doing 2dc, ch2, 2dc. Is this it or am i to do a dc but take off 2 and then do another dc taking 2 off than draw through 3

          2. Here’s what I did….Think of it like a modified puff stitch made in the space, you are not actually double crocheting any stitches together just going through the motion.

          3. She is not talking about the classic dtog read the notes and follow those instructions. Instead of crocheting two already made stitches together you make two together in the chain space. Kinda like a puff stitch.

  7. Any tips on picking a cake that will have enough to do the whole flower Center in one colour? I tried it in the purple one and it only did half. Thoughts?

    1. Hi Skye! I would look for a cake that has a big chunk of color in the center. Also you could cut off that first color right where the second color starts, then you know you have a big chunk of one color to work with. Then add the color you cut off to the end. I’ve cut through cakes to get the colors I want many times 🙂 Hope this helps!

  8. I ABSOLUTELY love love love this pattern , wish you had adult size . I made 2 of these . One I made with Caron Cakes and the other I made with Hobby Lobby’s “I love this cotton”it came out beautiful! This pattern wS extremely easy to follow and it worked up very quick . Thank you !
    Dawn

  9. I just finished my first circle vest. I love this pattern! It worked up really quick.! I plan on making 6 more. We have 7 granddaughters. I have already started on the second one.
    Thanks

  10. I am currently working on this using mandala yarn and it is beautiful. Just wanted to the last row to go. I modified d a little though because my cousin decided it should be for her and it was a little short and I still had plenty of yarn so I added a few of the netting rows and then done a row similar to the one with the dc2tog stitches and then another row of the netting to finish the last row.

  11. What size is the finished product. From the picture it looks like a 4 or 5T. But I just have the last to rows to finish and it looks more like maybe a 2T. I’m use it a size H hook.

  12. Maybe a typo in Row 11? ” *(hdc, 3dc, hdc) [in all in next] dc “??
I haven’t start one of these yet but am anxious to start using the Caron Cakes I have. (Just couldn’t say no to the beautiful, rich colors and mute, soft colors)

  13. im having a prob with round 12. its not working out right, if i skip a stitch, sc in next 3, skip stitch…. it dont seem right

    1. Hi ? You should have a dc in between the shells from the previous row, then sc across 3 stitches of the she’ll. Hope this helps!

  14. Can’t wait to get started on some of these. We just got 2 new Great Granddaughters. Opens a whole new world and lots of crocheting. Thanks

  15. Hi,
I am enjoying this pattern, however I am a little confused about row 12. The pattern says to slip stitch to next stitch after the join. Exactly what stitch am I to slip stitch to?
Can someone explain this to me?
    Thank you,
    Roxanne

    1. The stitch right next to the join 🙂 This is where the round starts. So instead of cutting the yarn and rejoining one stitch over, just sl st into the very next. Hope this helps!

  16. Thank you for this beautiful pattern. I do get 11 inches between the arm holes, but only around 22″ in diameter. (Used Bernat Pop & 5.5mm Hook) Will go up one hook size and add a row or 2 more before the last row of shells. Otherwise, very well & easy pattern to follow.

  17. About to start making the third one for my mini me! Really easy to follow pattern and so beautiful!!

  18. How could I make this fit a larger size? I’m using a thin yarn with a j hook. It looks beautiful but the size is smaller then a five year old. Also interested in adult sizing.

  19. Hello! I’m loving this pattern!! On row 13, after I’ve done the second armhole (ch24, skip 24 stitches, dc in next) it says *ch1 skip one stitch* repeat from * to *…..what does this mean? What am I doing after I skip one stitch? Is it supposed to be like it is in between the arm holes (ch1, skip 1, dc)? Please clarify this for me! This is my first one and I’m hoping to make one for myself as well!

  20. I’m so stuck on row 13 . I did the chain 27 skip 24 and the dc , ch1 , Skip 1 but I don’t know how many stitches I should need after the I do the second arm hole . Thanks

  21. Hi, I’m having trouble with Round 9. For some reason I keep getting 108 as my final stitch count for the end of the round instead of 114. I’m sure I followed the pattern correctly up until this point. I can’t figure out why this keeps happening.

      1. I figured it out. For some reason I did round 6 twice and it got messed up that way. Everything’s good now. Thanks.

  22. Hi! I’m interested in making this for an adult. I noticed on one of the comments you said to just keep going with the “mesh” until it’s the size we want. Would that work for sizing up for an adult or would the arm holes be in the wrong place? Any help sizing this up for an adult would be greatly appreciated!

  23. Hi! I would love to make this in an adult XL pattern. Any thoughts on how to accomplish this? I made this for my five-year-old daughter and it’s beautiful! Thank you for the pattern!

    1. Hi! You will probably want to add a few extra rounds before the armholes are made. I would measure how far apart you want the armholes, and then add rounds until it’s that size. After you make the armholes you can repeat the mesh rounds until it’s the size you want. I hope that helps!!

  24. Breann, I am loving this pattern! I am confused at the end of round 17. I chained 5 and sc in the last ch sp. The instructions say to sc to beginning chain 5. Do I chain 5 then sc to the beginning chain 5? Thanks so much for all your patterns!

  25. I have just finished row 10 and I have 59 stitches and not 58 including the 4 chain start and I need to finish this by Friday 20th can anyone help me please?

  26. In case anyone was curious, I made this with a dk Carons yarn and a 5mm hook and it’s sized like a 4-5 with 9in between arm holes and about 21in diameter.
Reading through all the comments really helped understand the pattern, but once I got going it was pretty easy to stop counting stitches and just follow the stitch pattern for each round.
