I love most everything about crocheting. I love the creativity and feeling of accomplishment it gives me. I love all the pretty yarn I get to play with and the endless possibilities. But if there’s two things I reallllly don’t like it’s crocheting into a long chain and weaving in a lot of ends. And with this Granny Square Baby Blanket Crochet Pattern… I did neither of those things!! Win-win!
The granny square is such a classic design and so many things can be made with just this simple pattern. I love that with the right yarn, this classic pattern can be made a little more modern. I wanted to keep the blanket simple and modern so I added a simple and solid border to finish out this baby blanket.
PATTERN
Materials
1.5 skeins Caron Big Cakes in Shadowberry
H/5.0 mm hook
Yarn needle
Scissors

Pattern Notes & Stitches to Know
sl st – slip stitch
ch – chain
dc – double crochet
Magic ring
Ch 3 at beginning of each round COUNTS as dc
Finished Size:
35″ x 35″
GRANNY SQUARE BABY BLANKET
Make a magic ring
Round 1: ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc, ch 3, join to first ch 3 with sl st, pull ring closed tight (12 dc)
Round 2: sl st over the next 2 dc to the ch 3 space, ch 3, (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) into ch 3 space, *(3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) into next ch 3 space* repeat from * to * around 2 more times, join to top of first ch 3 with sl st (24 dc)
Round 3: sl st over next 2 dc to the ch 3 space, ch 3, (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) into ch 3 space, *3 dc in between the 3 dc groups from previous row, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) into ch 3 space* repeat from * to * around, join to top of first ch 3 with sl st
Repeat round 3 for pattern. In each corner ch 3 space work (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc), and work 3 dc in between the 3 dc’s from the previous row across each side. Each round will increase by 12 dc
Repeat to round 29, or until desired size.
BORDER
Round 30: ch 3, dc in next 2 stitches, *(3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in ch 3 space, dc in each dc across to next ch 3 space* repeat from * to * around, join to top of first ch 3 with sl st
Round 31: ch 1, sc in each stitch to the ch 3 space, *(2 sc, ch 1, 2 sc) in ch 3 space, sc across to next ch 3 space* repeat from * to * around, join to first ch 1 with sl st
Round 32 – 33: ch 1, sc in each stitch to the ch 1 space, *(2 sc, ch 1, 2 sc) in ch 1 space, sc across to next ch 1 space* repeat from * to * around, join to first ch 1 with sl st
Fasten off, weave in all your ends

I am having troubles. I am on round 4 but can’t figure out last step of the round 3 instructions. The next chain 3 would be in the corner but that is not right because then when I go to restart it for round 5 I can’t slip stitch into a corner.
You should slip stitch in the first 2 dc, then its the ch 3 corner space. Hope that helps!
If I’m not changing colors do I need to chain 3 at end of row ?
Hi ? I’m not sure what you mean by this. I didn’t change colors as it’s self striping yarn, so you should be able to follow the pattern as its written. I hope this helps!!
How do you go about making this blanket larger?
Hi, it can be made as big as you like. Just continue the pattern until it’s the desired size 🙂
Sorry having trouble with round three. Corner done. Then, * 3 dc between the 3 dc chain groups from previous row. [ Okay so 3 dcs in Ch spaces ]. But then ( 3dc, ch3,
3dc) into ch 3 space*. Guess I need a pictorial because I’m just not getting this.

Hi! After you make the corner space, work another group of 3 dc in between the next two 3 dc groups from the previous row, next should be the corner ch 3 space where you will work another (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in that space.

Thanks for the pattern , i really like the way it looks and going to give it a try. Just have a question though Do you do any chains between the clusters on the side or just in the corner? if i am reading it right then it would be corner 3 dc, 3 ch, 3 dc hop to the next space and do 3 dc, no chain between. I would like to make this for my new nephew and want to make sure i am understanding it the correct way before i start my blanket. Thanks.
Correct. The only chains are in the corners 🙂

Hi! There are patterns for rectangular granny squares, they are more complicated than the basic square 🙂

All my corners and ‘cluster’ stitches are correct and the blanket is coming out lopsided. I’ve counted all stitches and corners and they are correct. I’m stumped.

The one I am looking at says Round 30 …*(3dc,ch3,3dc) in ch3 space, *dc in each dc across to next ch3 space* repeat from * to * …. So, not sure where the repeat takes place.
